Yahoo Answers, a user generated question and answer service, was first launched in December 2005. Yahoo Answers is a very popular website where virtually anyone can go for free, and ask any type of question they can think of. Aside from traffic, I think the more interesting comparison between Yahoo Answers and Wikipedia is the different approaches. You can see Yahoo itself is doing an excellent job of feeding users into the service, but note how Google's third on the list, sending Yahoo five percent of its traffic. The reason why Yahoo Answers is a good place to come and spend some time is because it gets good traction in the search engines, especially with long tail keywords.
Yahoo Answers appears to be definite extension of what Yahoo's Senior Vice President, Search and Marketplace, Jeff Weiner, calls FUSE (Find, Use, Share, Expand) and Yahoo's numerous efforts into online community building with services like Web 2.0. While Microsoft, Amazon and others are working to launch their own Question and Answer services to try and catch up with Yahoo Answers, Yahoo Answers has already gone and taken its service to the next level. One of the reasons the service gets so much traffic is because questions tend to get very high search engine placement, so redirecting those URLs properly would be of utmost importance.
The points system is weighted to encourage users to answer questions and to limit spam questions. You earn points mainly by answering questions, by having your answer judged "Best Answer", and by having other users give your answers a "thumbs up. Creating multiple accounts to reward yourself along with copying and pasting other people's answers and asking for points is an infraction and can get your yahoo account banned.
The Holy Grail of success to me, from a search marketing perspective, would be to find that question that is ranking well in Google or Yahoo and which is still accepting answers as Answers can help you to make money with your online business if you are using the right tool.
Every day, someone out there has a question, and someone out there knows the answer and gives it for free. You have to have a free Yahoo account to play along, and there is a point system you accumulate for answering and asking questions. However is just unusable in your mobile browser as the page takes about 3 minutes for the landing page, and 4 minutes to get a list of related questions and the extensive scrolling made the experience too painful.
Answers is a great example of combining the knowledge of the masses and using it to provide answers to questions on a wide variety of subjects.
